The Best Time to Call Candidates and Clients
As an ex-recruiter I have heard many different opinions on the best time to call clients and candidates.
Some are based on logic, others are based on personal beliefs or even superstitions.
What is clear is that there is no one size fits all solution, every industry or profession operates differently and requires a different approach.
Some of the advice on call timing (and the accompanying logic) that I have received over my career is below:
|After Work||Lunch Time|
|Positive||They aren’t being listened into by colleagues or
their boss and can hopefully talk more freely.
|Candidates are less distracted and
able to leave the office without need for excuse
|Negative||Intrusion into their personal time,
relies on you having a phone number for them
|Likely to be away from their desk phone|
|Friday Afternoon||Tuesday Morning|
|Positive||Clients are hopefully relaxed and looking
forward to the weekend
|Clients have had time to deal with all the
|Negative||May not be overly focused on commercial
Whilst the day or time of a call can influence your success, often it is instead used to as a reason not to call. The best advice is to call at any time, providing you check with the recipient that your call is convenient for them.
Social Media Can Help
Social media now offers a more precise insight into someone’s weekly schedule, for example by following them on Twitter you may see that they have tweeted from the Airport, often a situation when people have free time. This works well for those contacts who are active on Twitter but for those who aren’t there is another solution.
From my experience, one of the best tools available is Hubspot Sales email tracker, which enables you to see when your emails are opened and if that recipient opens or clicks on attachments or links.
The email tracker is anonymous and instantaneous, allowing recruiters to call candidates or clients when they are looking at your email.
Examples of this in action include sending CVs to a manager for review and then catching them shortly after they have opened the attachments, the same principle applies for job descriptions sent to candidates.
Hubspot Sales can be installed both into Outlook and Gmail, to find out how to do this watch this short video or go straight to the install page using this link: https://www.hubspot.com/products/crm/email-tracking
